Charlie Gallagher has been forging Medieval weaponry, edged
tools and bespoke ironwork for the past ten years. His work is
inspired by the Celtic and Medieval periods of Irish history, Irish
spiritual beliefs and traditional crafts. Starting at the age of
sixteen he is a self taught craftsman. He has built much of his
own equipment such as bellows, fireboxes and anvils and prefers
to use original hand forging techniques where possible to produce
his work. Over the years he has produced jewellery using silver,
bog oak, brass and copper, as well as some small items of
sculpture. He also has a keen interest in Medieval fighting styles
and trains in the use of weapons he produces. This has enabled
him to gain a much better understanding of the form and function
of his weaponry, bringing his work closer to the original Medieval
counterparts.
While blacksmithing is his primary interest, Charlie also works
with traditional building materials, such as dry and mortared
stone walling, post and beam walling and earthen wall construction
as a way of gaining a deeper understanding of traditional crafts,
and the role played by blacksmithing in providing the tools to
work at them.
